Is homemade sugar scrub good for your skin?
Homemade Sugar Body Scrubs are excellent for keeping skin looking radiant and feeling nourished.
Our method below uses sugar as a natural exfoliating agent which carefully removes dead skin cells, lifting away dirt and excess oil. Glycolic acid occurs naturally in sugar which further cleanses skin and dissolves dead skin cells.
Plus, you can add whatever you like to tailor your sugar scrub to your exact requirements.
I'll show you how to make one of my favourites below but you can adjust pretty much any of the ingredients so long as you bear in mind the basics of an effective scrub:
- an oil base (hazelnut, grapeseed, sunflower oil)
- an exfoliating substance (sugar, salt, oatmeal)
- an essential oil (or something that not only smells divine but helps balance your skin in some way - Cate Blanchett is rumoured to use fresh mint and lemon zest in hers)
For my oil base, I prefer coconut oil as it's shown to have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties whilst also containing antioxidants to protect your skin.
I also opt for granulated sugar as it suits my skin type better than salt or oatmeal. Just be careful when choosing your exfoliant. Make sure the particles are fine enough so they won't tear your skin.
For my fragrance, I just adore Rose Oil. It's great for boosting collagen production while also enhancing a glowing complexion
As an extra, I add in a little touch of raw honey. It's an extra help in cleansing skin whilst also soothing and protecting the skin from the elements.
Sugar Body Scrub Recipe
Melt 110g of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and add to 60g of Organic Demerara Sugar.
Add 1 tablespoon of Raw Honey and mix well.
Lastly, and to make your skin smell divine, include 5 drops of your chosen fragrance or essential oil.
I opt for Rio Rosa Mosqueta which is a wonderfully nourishing Rose oil.
Apply to skin, concentrating on problem patches then rinse off.
Be careful getting out of the shower or bath though as coconut oil can leave a slippery residue!
